PHOTOS OF PAST REGATTAS
|
|
Here are some pictures provided by
Dennis Smith who worked for the Post Office (formerly the G.P.O.). They date from around 1958/59.
The regattas had several crews from
financial institutions and this crew would have entered as a G.P.O. crew. The gentleman in the cap is the coxswain.
In the picture where the crew are
holding the oars, Dennis is in the middle. In the rowing pictures, Dennis is seen in the stroke seat (in two), and second bow (in the other two). |

As we collect new photographs we shall be adding them to the website. We would like to be able to print several photographs for each
decade up to present times. So, if you have any photographs which we could copy, we would be most grateful. Any information that you can provide with the photograph i.e. regarding crew members, which race etc would also be very helpful - originals will be returned straight back to you. Please see 'Contact' page for further information.
In the meantime, if you recognise yourself or friends in the above photographs we would be pleased to hear from you!

Left - Reg (in bow) in action.

Below - The same two crews, the picture to the right showing Tilbury Power Station in the background.

|
These pictures were kindly provided by brothers, Reg and Ken
Monk, who raced in opposing crews.
Ken's daughters, Sarah and Karen are keeping the family tradition
going by competing in present day Regattas.
Ken can be seen here sitting behind stroke.

Dennis'
crew, again, preparing to race. |
|
Left - the
same crew in action. The Regatta stalls and sideshows can be seen, in the background, on the Gordon Promenade. |
|
The photograph above shows a
crew from around 1988. In stroke is Mick Ramsey, followed by Paul Britton, Steve Cason and Ken Miller in bow. |
|
The group photograph below is from around 1993. Front row from
the left, Jackie McDermott, Janet Cooper, Sarah Wall and Gill Gilhooly. Back row from left, Dennis Cooper, Ken Miller, Mick Ramsey, Chris Cushing, Steve Cason, local boat builder Eric Mastin and Neil Gilhooly.
Many of these people in the photograph still row in todays
Regattas. |
|
The mixed crew on the right is from around 2003. Stroke
Sue Beecham, Kevin Luck, Mick Ramsey and bow Janet Cooper, coxswain Chris Cushing. This was the last year that the wooden skiffs were raced in the Regattas before the purchase of our fibre-glass boats. This photo is of the Stefan Scott, the last remaining wooden skiff owned by Gravesend Regatta Committee. |
|
The pictures above and below have been supplied by Colin Smith,
whose son Jack rowed in the Junior Regatta in 1996. Jack can be seen in the top picture sitting in the bow. Jack now rows in the adult regattas and his father Colin still coxes. |
|
The picture above shows the Pilot Rowing crew from around 1996,
stroke Mick Ramsey, Dennis Cooper, Colin Smith and Chris Cushing in bow. The gentlemen on the safety boat are Eric Mastin and Colin Fry. The coxswain is unknown. |
|
To the left is a crew from around 2003, showing stroke Shaun
Martin, Nathan Day, Mick Ramsey and Ken Miller, coxed by Chris Cushing. The boat was obviously taking on water, as it is being pumped out during the race!! |
|
The boat to the left is the Percy Sergant. This was sold in 2004 to
Edward Sargant (no relation), the chap seen here coxing. He completely renovated the skiff and entered it into the Great River Race in 2005. He brought the boat down to Gravesend to show us his fine work and despite the bad weather, three of our veteran rowers gave it a test row. Mick Ramsey stroke, Chris Cushing second stroke and Ken Miller in bow.
Edward has since bought the Tertius Metcalf from the committee
and this will be entered in the Great River Race in 2008. |
